There’s a still in the street outside your window
You’re keepin’ secrets on your pillow
Let me inside, no cause for alarm
I promise tonight not to do no harm
I promise you baby I won't be no harmAnd we're caught up in the crossfire
A heaven and hell
And we're searching for shelter
Lay your body down (x3)Watching your dress as you turn down the light
I forget all about the storm outside
Dark clouds roll their way over town
Heartache and pain came pouring down like
Chaos in the rain, yeah
They're handing it outAnd we're caught up in the crossfire
A heaven and hell
And we're searching for shelter
Lay your body down (x3)Tell the devil that he can go back from where he came
His fire he airs all through their beating vein
And when the hardest part is over we'll be here
And our dreams will break the boundaries of our fears
Boundaries of our fearsLay your body down (x6)
Next to mine

I had skin like leather and the diamond-hard look of a cobra
I was born blue and weathered but I burst just like a super-nova
I could walk like brando right into the sun, an’ dance just like a casanova
With my black-jack and jacket and my hair slicked sweet
Silver studs on my duds just like a harley in heat
When I strut down the street I can hear its’ heartbeat
The sisters fell back and said "don’t that man look pretty"
The cripple on the corner cried out "penny, nickels for your pity"
Them gasoline boys down-town, they sure talk gritty
It’s so hard to be a saint in the city
I was the king of the alley, mama, I could talk some trash
I was the prince of the paupers, crowned down-town at the beggars’ bash
I was a pimps main prophet, I kept everything cool
Just a back-street gambler with the luck to lo..ose
And when the heat came down it was left on the ground, mama
Devil appeared to me like jesus through the steam in the street, an’
Showed me a hand that even the cops couldn’t beat
And I felt his hot breath on my neck as I dove into the heat, and it’s so hard to be a saint when you’re just a poor bo..oy out on the street
And the sages of the subway sit just like the living dead
As the tracks clack out the rhythm, the eyes fixed straight ahead
They ride the line of balancin’, hold on by just a thread
Well, it’s too hot in these tunnels, you can get hit up by the heat
When you get up to get out at your next stop, but they push you right down in your seat
And your heart starts beatin’ faster as you struggle to your feet
Then you’re out of that hole!, back on the street
And them south-side sisters, they sure look pretty
And the cripple on the corner cries out "nickels for your pity"
And them down-town boys, they sure talk gritty
It’s so hard to be a saint in the c..c..city

Whenever I feel like givin' up
Whenever my sunshine turns 2 rain
Whenever my hopes and dreams are aimed in the wrong direction
She's always there tellin' me how much she cares
She's always in my hair
She's always in my hair, my hair
Whenever I feel like not 2 great at all
Whenever I'm all alone
Even if I hit the wrong notes
She's always in my boat
She's always there tellin' me how much she cares
She's always in my hair
She's always in my hair, my hair
(Maybe I'll marry her)
Maybe I'll marry her, maybe I won't
Maybe I will not
Let me tell U, baby (Even if I was a gigolo all my life)
If I was a gigolo all my life
She'd still be there tellin' me just how much she really cares
(She cares)
She's always in my hair
She's always in my hair, my hair
Yeah
Listen...
Whenever I feel like givin' up
Whenever my sunshine turns 2 rain
Whenever my hopes and dreams are aimed in the wrong direction
She's always there tellin' me just how much she cares
(Tellin' me how much she cares)
Tell me, baby
Always in my hair
She's always in my hair, my hair

Mama take this badge from me
I can't use it anymore
It's getting dark too dark to see
Feels like I'm knockin' on heaven's door
Kn-kn-knockin' on heaven's door
Kn-knockin' on heaven's door
Kn-knockin' on heaven's door
Kn-knockin' on heaven's door
Mama put my guns in the ground
I can't shoot them anymore
That cold black cloud is comin' down
Feels like I'm knockin' on heaven's door
Kn-kn-knockin' on heaven's door
Kn-knockin' on heaven's door
Kn-knockin' on heaven's door
Kn-knockin' on heaven's door
"You just better start sniffin' your own
rank subjugation jack 'cause it's just you
against your tattered libido, the bank and
the mortician, forever man and it wouldn't
be luck if you could get out of life alive"
Kn-kn-knockin' on heaven's door
